SAN FRANCISCO
Jack LaLanne is believed to have opened the first modern health club in downtown Oakland — at 409 15th St., to be exact — in 1936. Initially, the concept went so poorly that LaLanne had to perform massages on the side to pay his rent.
Seventy-two years later, with the blessing and encouragement of the 93-year-old Godfather of Fitness himself, another LaLanne is carrying on the family tradition of improving and lengthening lives through fitness and nutrition. With any luck, he’ll be just as successful and carry on just as long…

Hyperinsulinemia…
Posted by: chrisl @ 10:05 pm

Dear Chris,
After watching a recent report on America’s adult and childhood obesity, diabetes and heart disease epidemics, it was shocking to learn about how the food industry is to blame. What can I do to protect myself and my children from these diseases?

The need for public education regarding how the foods we eat are affecting our health is tremendous. Just like you, many of us are unaware of why good nutrition is so important. The food industry governs the messages delivered by the mainstream media. Unfortunately these messages are driven by profit with little regard for public health. When your children are asking for cereal full of sugar and processed grains, it is because “Tony the Tiger” says they are ok, not because they are a good for your child! In fact, consumption of packaged, processed, pasteurized and homogenized food products like cereal, snack bars, yogurts, sodas and juices boxes, etc…is a major cause of why you and/or your children are suffer from physical and/or psychological health problems. These foods cause a condition known as hyperinsulinemia. After a “google” search of Hyperinsulinemia you will find that it is linked to every major disease including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and dementia. In answer to your questions, you have to start by taking responsibility for what you and your family eat. Do not buy these unhealthy foods. If they are not at home, they will not be eaten. Teach your children about the evils of sugar-laden foods. You have to eat ‘real’ food. I am talking about natural foods in their natural state. Eat fruits and vegetables. Snack on seeds, nuts and berries. Cook fresh fish. Drink pure water. Visit a farmers market near you to discover a beautiful harvest of such foods. …And remember what uncle Jack says,”If man made it, don’t eat it!”

Drink your GREENS!
Posted by: chrisl @ 10:27 pm

We are all familiar with the health benefits of fresh fruit and vegetable juices. The Jack LaLanne POWER JUICER has made this possible for millions of people worldwide. Another fabulous appliance well worth having is the HEALTH MASTER 100 blender. This machine can help increase your consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables as well. Green vegetables are extremely nutritious when eaten raw. Some of you are saying…”raw”? Well, I understand that it may be less than ideal to consume larger amounts of kale, swiss chard, or collard greens… uncooked. I have a solution! This recipe for a GREEN SMOOTHIE will provide the vital nutrients including fiber and enzymes, providing a well balanced meal to help keep your digestive system strong and healthy:
2 leaves Kale or Chard
1 small Apple or Pear
2 scoops egg protein powder
water

Blend well and enjoy immediately!

Just wanted to say what an amazing man Jack is. I remember watching him as a child and was always amazed at the feats he would perform. As an athlete in my younger days it was easy to stay in shape but then the worst thing happened. Corporate America got hold of me and I got fat and lazy. All last year I did research on every fad diet in America (god there are allot of them) and then on January 1st decided to do it the old fashion way, Jack’s way…. exercise and eat right! It started with me cleaning out my kitchen of all the bad food and buying more wholesome foods (fish, vegetables, fruits etc) then it started with walking the dog everyday. at 323 pounds I couldn’t do much more. but each week I felt better, lost weight and got more energy. Now I lift weights, walk, run and have lost 52 pounds! I plan to have lost 80 by the time I go to Cancun in July.

If you speak to Jack, please thank him for setting such a good example and getting me back on the right track. I knew if what he did worked for him for so long then it had to work for me better than attkins, south beach or anything else! This has been a life changing time for me and I really feel I owe it to Jack and his no non-sense approach!

Thanks
Carl

Fiscal Fitness-Why Its Important
Posted by: chrisl @ 11:56 pm

This weeks radio show (Monday, March 31st @ 9am PST ) is an in-depth follow-up to one Jack did last November discussing the need to understand your financial health as well as your physical health. In the earlier show, Jack and his co-author Matthew J. Rettick were finishing up their book Fiscal Fitness, a book which tackles the subject of what might happen if you extend your life by following Jack’s philosophy but don’t pay attention to your finances. As Jack says, your health account is just as important as your bank account and both should work together to keep you physically and fiscally fit well into your retirement years. After all, if you’re going to follow Jack’s advice, it’s likely you are going to live a lot longer than the average person so you want to be smart about matching your bank account to your health account. Today we discuss the book, just released last Thursday, March 24, 2008, and give away free autographed copies to all callers. Our trivia contest winner will also win a juicer.

Exercise…your RIGHT!
Posted by: chrisl @ 5:05 pm

Each and every one of us have a right to exercise. Any way you want. If you are looking for ways to get moving, I recommend the recently released Jack LaLanne Show DVD’s. They are just as effective and entertaining as they were 50 years ago. These re-mastered original shows are a joy to watch. You will be guided through each exercise by Jack as you experience a total body workout. If you prefer other methods of exercising, make sure that you are consistent. Just as you would brush your teeth and tie your shoes… exercise must be done every day as a part of your healthy lifestyle.

“EXERCISE IS KING, NUTRITION IS QUEEN, PUT THEM TOGETHER AND YOU’VE GOT A KINGDOM”.

If man made it, don’t eat it!

This classic LaLanne-ism is advice that was ahead of its time. Today we realize what Jack was talking about. Seemingly at odds with the influence of the food industry, consuming ‘man made’, processed, packaged foods has become a major factor in the decline of America’s health. For over 50 years Jack has been telling us…”Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible”. The lack of natural, ‘real’ food in the diet has led to serious health problems including; obesity, diabetes and heart disease! Make the effort to purchase fresh fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts. These foods provide nutrients you can not find anywhere else. Eating fruit and vegetables RAW is highly recommend. Juice them. Blend them. Take pride in your health. Start by going to the grocery store and making these healthier foods available. Exercise everyday and make an effort to choose natural foods. You will soon be feeling healthier and happier about doing something for the most important person in the world…YOU!!!

Jack & Elaine’s 12 Hints For a Happy, Healthy

Jack & Elaine’s 12 Hints For a Happy, Healthy
Relationship In Your Marriage.

1. You’ve got to be friends and have a sense of humor. You’re a team.

2. Be careful not to blame each other. Be mindful of each others’ needs.

3. Pat each other on the back. In other words, be kind and supportive of each other, give each other praise.

4. Remember: Patience wins the race.

5. Leave little love notes around the house and don’t forget birthdays and anniversaries.

6. Sex…It takes energy to have sex. If you’re not in shape and you’re pooped out all the time, it’s hard to have sex. Exercise gives energy, and when you have energy…

7. Give each other space and freedom to pursue each other’s interests.

8. Have mutual respect. Accept each others imperfections and don’t try to change each other.

9. Live within your means. Pay bills on time. Don’t argue about money.

10. Don’t carry a grudge. Never go to bed angry.

11. By all means, trust your mate. Learn to forgive and use
“we” instead of “me”.

12. Don’t expect happiness without effort. I once heard a minister say, “Marriage is like riding a bicycle – you have to steer and pedal during the whole trip, not just at the start.” Now let’s start a little exercise session!

Jack LaLanne’s Magic 10 Ways To Be a Success and a Winner in Life
Filed under: General

Jack LaLanne’s Magic 10 Ways To Be a Success and a Winner in Life

1. Figure out what you want to be successful in. Studies, health, business, making money, friendships, school, sports.

2. You decide what you want to be successful in, not someone else. Being successful means hard work - if someone else decides what you want, you won’t be satisfied. You be the one to decide what you want and go get it.

3. Don’t just stand by and expect success to happen. Everyday in every way do something to get you to your goal.

4. Be sure to draw a plan of what you are trying to accomplish, be very definite. Everything you want write out how you plan to go about it.

5. Patience wins the race; don’t be over anxious, you can’t be successful overnight.

6. Remember small changes lead to big changes. It’s like planting seeds, you plant small seeds and they grow to be big living things. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you want to lose weight do it a pound at a time, if you want to save money pennies grow into dollars, etc.

7. Don’t be a quitter! Quitters never succeed, take reverse in your stride, learn from setbacks, don’t make the same mistakes again, use your experiences - they are great teachers.

8. When I was a boy building my body I had goals, I’d have these goals written out. I would have them where I would always see them. When I reached my goals I’d change them to bigger and bigger challenges. I always had a goal to achieve. Keep the carrot in front of the horse it, makes life thrilling.

9. Believe. Believing is so important for success in life; so
a. Believe in yourself
b. Believe in your plan for success
c. Believe in the omnipotent power that is around us.
I believe anything in life is possible if you make it happen, ask that great
power for help and guidance.

10. I’m going to give you two words that if you use in your daily life anything
will be possible, it can’t fail. These two words will not let you down, let them
burn in your heart, soul and memory. What are these magic words? Pride and
Discipline. Pride to be proud of who you are, what you stand for, proud of
what you do, proud of your family, friends and country. Discipline this is
what makes everything possible. Know when to say yes or no. Discipline, it
controls your actions, decisions and thoughts.
A. You’ve hear the expression “we are all born equal.” I don’t believe this, we are all different. There is only one you, you can do many things that I can’t do and I can do some things that you probably can’t do, so find out what you are best at and what makes you happy and go for it.

B. Don’t be one of the crowd, be different, don’t follow. You be a leader. If you believe what you are doing is right, stand by it. Don’t worry what the crowd thinks, you be a winner, let them be losers.

C. Be truthful, especially to yourself. The only person you are accountable to is you. Be responsible for your actions, thoughts and deeds. Remember to be honest and true to yourself.
